Ready for our September Fast?!
Matthew 6:16-18 NLT
16 “And when you fast, don’t make it obvious, as the hypocrites do, for they try to look miserable and disheveled so people will admire them for their fasting. I tell you the truth, that is the only reward they will ever get. 17 But when you fast, comb your hair and wash your face. 18 Then no one will notice that you are fasting, except your Father, who knows what you do in private. And your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.

The Spiritual Practice of fasting
Fasting is a practice found throughout Scripture. A fast in the Bible is usually a voluntary, total abstinence from food for a set time for the purpose of devoting oneself to seeking God. Fasting denies our flesh what it wants so that we can focus more clearly on strengthening our spirits.

In the Old Testament, it appears that fasting with prayer had to do with a sense of need and dependence on God through difficult moments. Prayer and fasting are combined in the Old Testament in times of mourning, repentance, and/or deep spiritual need.

In the New Testament fasting and prayer are connected directly to worshipping the Lord and seeking His favor when making important decisions. Fasting along with prayer seems to indicate the sincerity of the people praying and the critical nature of the situations in which they find themselves.
